Crate Diggers: Go Inside Pete Rock's 100,000 Records
If hip hop producer Pete Rock had only recorded 1992's "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," his track with rapper CL Smooth about the death of their friend Troy "Trouble T Roy" Dixon and one of the most acclaimed tracks in hip hop, he'd have earned his place among rap royalty. But Rock's career, spanning more than 20 years, has led to collaborations with countless rappers and always ends up on "Greatest producers of all time" lists.
In the latest episode of "Crate Diggers," step inside Rock's home as he takes us through his 50,000 records (with 40,000 more in his mother's house) and shares the story behind one of the most famous samples in hip hop. The son of a DJ, Rock would attend his dad's parties and became a music obsessive at an early age, spurred on by his cousin, rapper Heavy D.
"It ain't really organized," admits Rock of his collection, which includes Muhammad Ali's funk album and rare Marvin Gaye records. "I know where my s**t is. All I gotta do is see one record out of the pack and I know where I'm diggin'."
In the video above, Rock discusses where he hunts for rare vinyl and how he discovered saxophonist Tom Scott's "Today," the basis for "T.R.O.Y." "What intrigued me about this album was obviously the cover and the colorful little flowers with him in the grass laying down playing his sax," said Rock. "It made me want to listen to it. Classic material right here."
