IAMSU! Riffs On Melodics and Art Over Education

The West Coast rapper reveals his self-taught piano-playing skills and explains why he chose his debut album over his degree

For IAMSU!, hip hop is all about beautiful noise, and his music is just as anchored on intricate instrumentation as it on thought-provoking verses.

"I think my sound comes with a lot of melody," he tells Fuse. "I play with melody. I'm just a fan of really well-produced music, taking the music to different places [and] incorporating live instrumentation. Maybe I'll use a vocoder or just different effects on my vocals....I like to really delve into effects, production and the overall sound. I like to make things melodic."

The rapper is dedicated to his art to a point where he had to choose between his music and another passionate pursuit: His education, which is currently on hold as he navigates the launch of his career.

"I come from an educated family, so it was everything to get my degree," he says. "My mom understood that I couldn't finish at the time, and she respected that I was gonna take my career really serious. Eventually, I plan on going back to school and getting my degree just off of respect, and I feel like it'd be a cool notch to have on my belt. At the time, I just couldn't do it. It was getting too hectic at school. I could put hella money from my tuition into my music career, you know what I mean, so I had to take a break from school. I would either be sleeping in the student rec center and my song would be on the radio, and I'd be in class, and someone would recognize me, and I'd feel hella crazy! I'd just be hella uncomfortable. I can't just be sitting there, raising my hand and asking questions. I need to go do something else."
