Melanie Martinez treats her visuals just as seriously as her music, made clear in the stunningly chaotic "Pity Party" video. Our latest FM First artist takes us through her love of music-video directing and what she learned from creating her "angry" visual:
"I think the most challenging part of directing the 'Pity Party' video was that I was the only person in the video so I couldn't really be behind the camera as much as I would have liked to have been. That's really my favorite part, not being in the shots and being able to really, really feel like I'm actually directing.
"I learned to be a lot more vocal and gain a lot more confidence in directing. I've been writing all the treatments and the storyboarding, but with the actual act of telling someone what to do—like when I first stated off making music videos for 'Dollhouse'—I didn't know how to be that vocal. I knew exactly what I wanted, but I was just very shy."
