By teaming on the Major Lazer track "Lean On," Diplo and MØ earned one of the summer's unexpected smashes with their Eastern music-inspired house jam, and put the Danish vocalist on people's radar (much more so than her Iggy Azalea collab "Beg for It" did). Now, we have her official follow-up, a solo single that will hopefully lead her next album.
Produced by Major Lazer maestro Diplo, "Kamikaze" also brings a quirky, world-music EDM sound with what sounds a mix of like synthed-out violins and reed music with bouncy pop beats. There's a slight hint of Jack Ü's "Where Are Ü Now" reverberating throughout this, but it's not overwhelming enough to make it sound like a copycat.
MØ spoke about her goals for "Kamikaze" as well as her super-producer friend in a press release:
"I love working with Diplo, it's always such a fun and open-minded creative process. It's about making memorable songs but, more than that, it's about making pop music that wants to push boundaries. I've been loving all kinds of pop since I first fell in love with the Spice Girls, but pop needs to bring something new to the table, it needs balls. And that's what you get working with Diplo."
No word on whether this previews a new MØ album or not, but it definitely cements her in a sweet spot as EDM's new go-to vocalist.
