Kevin Gates Describes Inspiration to Take Music Seriously: Interview

With two mixtapes charting in the Top 40 on the Billboard 200, Kevin Gates is worth watching as he gears up for his full-length debut Islah, dropping early next year. FM sat down with the Louisiana-bred rapper to get to know him a little better, and the Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J collaborator told us about how he first entered the hip hop game by detailing some extremely humble early origins:

"I think I was in middle when I wrote my first rap. I had a little machine I used to record at the house; it was raggedy, it was bullshit. I started recording myself on a computer at my grandmother's house. After that, I started going to a regular studio."

The 29-year-old also revealed his thought process behind turning his music into a legitimate career, likely around the time he broke out with his 2008 Lil Boosie collaboration "Get in the Way":

"I started taking music when I saw the way my fans were responding to me and that's when I decided, 'You know what? I want to be appreciated in my entirety. Kevin Gates makes great music. Kevin Gates is a great person, a great thinker, a great everything.'"

Listen to the rapper's just-released new song "2 Phones," and look out for Islah to drop on January 29, 2016.
